Lift The Lid

When you work for a large organization, your goals and related performance determine the size of your bonus and whether you get a raise or not.  When you are an independent consultant, it really isn't any different.

In a company, goals are set to align personal performance with the company's, thus ensuring that everyone is pulling the oars in the right way, at the right time.  When the team works together to hit their goals, the company is marching in step to achieve it's overall goals.

As a consultant, you should take the time to set your own goals to ensure that you stay on track and achieve you personal goals. However, many independent consultants don't have any goals. For some reason, these former executives who insisted that their former direct reports have goals to help ensure their company's results were met, feel that they can go on autopilot when they go into business for themselves.  This might help explain why so many independent consultants fail.

I would argue that goals can be self fulfilling prophecies.  If you don't set measurable goals to work on, your work will suffer from a lack of focus and direction.  At the end of the year you will get the results you deserve.  You may make money but without well thought out plans and goals, you will not maximize your earnings potential and you will suffer from the impact of living in a reactive world instead of taking advantage of living in a proactive world.

Set measurable goals for yourself.  If you were working for a client without a plan and goals supporting the plan, the first thing you would recommend would be for the client to develop a plan and set goals for the key team members.

Physician, heal thyself!!

Set your goals, then review your goals at the next Local Cabinet meeting.  Listen to their questions, their challenges, and their responses to your goals.  Local Cabinets will help you see the gaps in your plans, goals, and services.  More importantly, they will push you and stretch you out of your comfort zone. Your old boss use to do that but you don't work for them anymore so let The Cabinet do this for you. Listen to your trusted team of advisers on your Local Cabinet.  They will help you "Lift the Lid."  Don't let your lack of focus, lack of goals, be a barrier to your personal success.  Let your goals drive your actions to achieve extraordinary results.

Somebody is going to develop a multimillion dollar consulting business over the next few months.  Is it you?  Why not YOU?  Develop your plan and set your goals.  Use your fellow Cabinet members to raise your bar by really challenging you.  Challenge yourself.  Go for it!
